CJ Stander says Munster want to create their own legacy by winning trophies, rather than living on past achievements.

The reigning Pro12 champions were Champions Cup winners in 2006 and 2008, but have not tasted European success since.

Stander, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this month which will see him remain at the club until at least June 2018, hopes to keep gathering silverware and become part of the club's impressive history.

"We're a young group and there are a lot of new faces, young guys in the squad, and I think we spoke as a group about wanting to create our own legacy and win stuff," he said.

"You can't look back on what they did in 2006 and 2008. It's not the same people, there's a few of those players coaching now."

The 25-year-old was named captain in place of the injured Peter O'Mahony, and he insists while the responsibility is great, it does not weigh him down.

"There's a big step up for me as a leader. It's just the history of the club, the boys before me who captained the side, and what they achieved," Stander added.

"For me, it's not a burden at all captaining Munster; it's a huge challenge because it brings a different level to my game."
