Child Prodigy: Not Yet 19, She's a Croatian Champion in Both Basketball and Water Polo!
Lea Vukić, a Zagreb native, is not yet 19 years old, but she already holds Croatian championship titles in two sports: water polo and basketball.
It's no surprise she shows talent and interest in both sports, as her mother Marija played basketball and her father Hrvoje played water polo. She began her athletic journey with water polo.
In the 2020/21 season, I won gold with Mladost Zagreb as a cadet, junior, and senior. I actually started playing water polo in Canada, where we lived for six years. My dad was a coach in Toronto. I played water polo there for the last two years. Then we returned to Croatia, to Zagreb, and I started playing for Mladost. Lea Vukić for Dubrovački vjesnik
Then, in 2021, she "broke her dad's heart" when she picked up a basketball, and it was love at first sight. She traded water polo for the magical game under the hoops. At Ana Vrsaljko's camp, she discovered all the charms of basketball:
"That's where I learned my first basketball steps. Iva Todorić and Karmen Miloglav helped Ana Vrsaljko. Since I live in Zagreb, Vrsaljko recommended me to Trešnjevka 2009, and that's how my basketball career began. In 2022, I was the Croatian champion with Trešnjevka 2009's pre-cadets, the next season a cadet champion, and last season both a cadet and junior champion."
This season, she's again a junior champion, making her the protagonist of this story, having won eight Croatian championships in two different sports in less than five years. After three water polo titles, she now boasts five basketball golds.
When I told my parents I wanted to switch to basketball, they weren't thrilled. My mom came up with a plan to send me to a basketball camp, thinking that once I saw how far ahead other girls were, I'd lose interest. The plan spectacularly backfired because coach Ana Vrsaljko, who organized the Belece camp, told my mom and dad that I was great for basketball and practically enrolled me with Dean Nemec at ŽKK Trešnjevka, ha ha ha... Her success is even greater considering Vukić played for ŽKK Zadar Plus in the senior league and for the junior/senior team at Trešnjevka 2009 during the current season. She explained how she managed living between Zagreb and Zadar:
"Weekly, I'd complete three club training sessions with Trešnjevka, and then I'd spend two days in Zadar with the team. It was quite demanding, and without the cooperation of all parties, it would have been difficult to pull off. That half-season in Zadar, where they welcomed me warmly, was incredibly beneficial for my development as a player, so it was definitely worth the effort. A big thank you to everyone."
She also trains in 3x3 basketball.
No offense to anyone, but 3x3 is my first and greatest love. If there's anything better than streetball, I don't know about it, ha ha. I think 3x3 is the best developmental tool a young player can have. Firstly, because of the shorter shot clock, you have to make decisions much faster, which boosts basketball IQ. Of course, 1-on-1 play is very prominent, and a lot more contact is allowed, so you have to be able to drive past your defender to create an advantage. Lea Vukić
This year, she's heading to Yale.
"I recently received official confirmation that I've been accepted to Yale, so there's no turning back now. Last summer, I went on official visits to several schools, and Yale seemed like the perfect environment."
Incidentally, Lea is often compared to basketball player Luka Božić in Croatia.
Like the Croatian forward, Lea operates on the court like a "Swiss Army knife": a player who, in the body of a primary scorer, possesses the court vision of a top point guard and the rebounding aggression of a center. Their comparison isn't merely a result of fascination with statistics, but rather the recognition of an identical basketball genotype – one that doesn't just decide games with points, but with total control over all aspects of play, leaving opponents without answers in the same way Božić has "terrorized" the ABA League for years.
