Chelsea have officially announced the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The 35-year-old former Manchester United and Arsenal player has penned a two-year deal with his new club. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club.
Last season, Welbeck netted 13 goals in 37 appearances for Brighton, marking his best career tally. Only three English players scored more than him in the Premier League. He becomes Chelsea's third summer acquisition, following Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
"When you hear of interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with immense pride," Welbeck stated. "I already know a few of the lads, I've had fantastic conversations with the manager, and I already feel that connection. I have this fire within me and I'm ready to give everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea and the fans proud."
Welbeck's arrival signals a shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy, as the club's owners have primarily focused on signing younger players since their takeover in 2022. His signing also raises questions about the future of other central strikers at the club. João Pedro is considered the first-choice, but the squad also includes Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson.
