Emergency services soon arrived at the scene, placing Newton on a stretcher before taking him to hospital in an ambulance.

The Panthers confirmed on Twitter that the 2011 first overall pick had not been seriously injured in the crash.

A post on the Panthers' page read: "Cam Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center and will remain there overnight for observation."

Meanwhile, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released a statement, which read: "Mr. Netwon was involved in a two car collision on S. Church street in Charlotte at approximately 12:30 today. He and the driver of the other vehicle were both transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the cause of the wreck."

Pictures have since emerged of Newton smiling on the side of the road, indicating that the 25-year-old is not severely injured.

Since being drafted out of Auburn University, Newton has racked up over 14,000 passing yards, scored 111 total touchdowns for the Panthers and has twice been selected to the Pro Bowl.

The Panthers stand at 4-8-1 heading into their clash with the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend, but can still reach the play-offs despite that disappointing record.
