Rounding out the podium was Gordon's team-mate Dale Earnhardt Jr, who chalked up his eighth top-five finish in 16 races this season.

Next in were Jamie McMurray (Chip Ganassi Racing), Paul Menard (Richard Childress Racing), Kasey Kahne (Hendrick Motorsports), Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports), Ambrose, Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway Racing) and Clint Bowyer (Michael Waltrip Racing).

Gordon (580 points) extended his Sprint Cup Series lead to 20 points over team-mate Johnson (560), with Earnhardt Jr (555) completing a monopoly in the top three for Hendrick Motorsports.

They have opened up a sizable gap to fourth-placed Matt Kenseth (515) for Joe Gibbs Racing, after he was involved in an accident and retired after 74 laps on Sunday.
