André Villas-Boas has hailed Cardoso Varela's return to FC Porto as "an example for national and international football," emphasizing that it marks a happy ending to a story that began "violently and sadly."
Speaking to the club's media, the Porto president described the 17-year-old forward as "a great talent" and highlighted his "total interest in returning to FC Porto," as well as the "considerable efforts as an athlete and a man" he demonstrated to make the return a reality.
Villas-Boas recalled the player's troubled past, referring to "undue harassment of a kid and a family, false moves, and broken dreams."
"This transfer tells many stories, stories of undue harassment of a kid and a family, false moves, and broken dreams. A story that began violently and sadly now ends well and happily, with a return home. Cardoso Varela is a son of this club, whom we always wanted to see succeed at FC Porto. He showed his remorse, the necessary remorse, and the recognition of a mistake, for which he is not solely to blame," he underlined.
The Dragons' top leader explained that the player and his family were "victims of threats and lived false dreams," but now the youngster has "found happiness again, found his home, and his former teammates."
Despite his potential, Cardoso Varela's journey will restart with the B team. "He is obliged to take a step back, because his current placement is with the B team, but with the potential he has, we believe he will quickly reach the A team," he noted, recalling that, in 2024, the plan was for the player to already be training with the main squad.
For the president, this transfer represents "a good example of repentance," with the club reopening its doors "to one of its sons." Villas-Boas believes the case serves as a lesson against "agents who should never manipulate families into believing in false dreams."
However, the future now depends exclusively on the player. "We opened the doors, but now his talent must always be at the club's disposal. The athlete must perform for the benefit of FC Porto and its objectives, and that is what we believe in," concluded André Villas-Boas.
