On the bomb our military dropped on Internally Displaced Persons
The Nigerian Airforce accidentally dropped bombs on Internally Displaced Persons in the middle of January 2016.
Two days later, President Muhammadu Buhari went on leave to the UK.
Because we so badly wanted the President to speak to the nation and and he didn't, we decided to write him a speech.
"Fellow Nigerians, today is a day of tragedy and mourning. The Armed Forces of our country, and myself are filled with grief over the tragedy of the Rann Incident.
"We share this pain and it is indeed a national tragedy. About 2 years ago, we made a promise to crush the terror that has chosen to divide us as a nation and threaten our unity.
"We’ve lost innocent people, young and old, to the evil of terrorism. But never have we lost this many Nigerians in one day, in this tragic manner.
"While in pursuit of fleeing Boko Haram fighters, our fighter planes made a technical error of dropping bombs in civilian areas.
"We take responsibility for this grave error and we’re sorry. We truly are. We assure you that it will never repeat itself. A disciplinary committee has been set up and all personnel involved will answer to this.
"We mourn their loss, as one nation, with one purpose.
"To the families and loved ones of the deceased, we cannot claim to feel pain as much as you do, but remember that we’re with you in prayers.
"The victims of the ongoing insurgency are a symbol of hope, and of courage. Despite everything you’ve been through, you still manage to go on with life everyday.
"Our hearts are with you. We want to bring an end to this long and pointless war, so you can go back to leading normal lives.
"We are also taking strict measures to make sure this tragedy never repeats itself.
"The surviving families of all the victims will also be duly compensated.
"I hereby declare three days of mourning for the loss.
"Let us, in these moments of reflection, remember who the true enemy is; the terror that is trying to break us.
"We promised to bring an end to the menace, and we will. I implore you to keep the faith alive.
"Some day soon, the sun will rise everywhere in our country, and there will be peace in the land again.
"Thank you, and may God bless our country."
