Bruno Fernandes Touts Compatriot as Potential Man Utd Successor

Manchester United is gearing up for a busy summer transfer window, with midfield reinforcements identified as a top priority. In this context, Bruno Fernandes has reportedly suggested the signing of his compatriot Mateus Fernandes, the West Ham midfielder under Nuno Espírito Santo, as his long-term successor at Old Trafford.

Uncertainty surrounding Bruno's own future, as he enters the final year of his contract in June (with the club holding an option for a further season), has United weighing various options. Casemiro's free transfer departure is already confirmed, making the acquisition of a defensive midfielder a priority, but the club could look to bring in up to two new players for the engine room.

According to The Sun, Manchester United views Mateus Fernandes as a shrewd secondary signing and could be encouraged to pursue him by their Portuguese captain. In addition to the West Ham midfielder, United's target list also includes Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali.

Despite only arriving at the start of the season from Southampton, West Ham may struggle to hold onto Mateus Fernandes. The team managed by NES currently sits in 18th place in the Premier League, one point below the safety line, with seven games remaining.

A potential relegation could force the sale of several of their star players, much like what happened with the Saints, including the 21-year-old midfielder. He was the club's most expensive signing last summer, in a deal that could reach €50 million, and is under contract until 2030.

This season, the young Portuguese talent has been a standout in the Hammers' midfield, tallying three goals and three assists in 30 appearances across all competitions. Furthermore, he received his first call-up to the national team during the March international break, making his debut against the USA, and has revealed that his idol is none other than Bruno Fernandes, also a former Sporting player.
