Brighton Officially Breaks Transfer Record as Tottenham Completes Fourth-Largest Sale
Brighton has finalized a club-record transfer for Luka Vuskovic. The 19-year-old defender joins from Tottenham, with the Seagulls reportedly paying £46 million, plus an additional £4 million in add-ons. Spurs will also receive 20% of any future sale of the Croatian, and retain a buy-back option should they match any future offer Brighton receives for the player.
Vuskovic spent last season on loan at Hamburger SV. His agents made it clear that the Croatian sought regular playing time with a permanent club, rather than another loan spell. Tottenham couldn't guarantee this, especially after acquiring Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, while still having Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Kevin Danso on their roster. This led to his transfer, which marks Tottenham's fourth-largest sale, following Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, and Kyle Walker.
Vuskovic has signed a five-year contract with Brighton, with an option for an additional 12 months.
"Luka has enjoyed a fantastic start to his career, and we've been monitoring him closely. Last season, he demonstrated his ability to play at a very high level. We want to help him build on that within our environment.
There's been a lot of external noise surrounding Luka's arrival, but he's still a young man who will need time to adapt to the demands of playing for Brighton and in the Premier League. However, we are confident he will handle this calmly," commented head coach Fabian Hürzeler.
