British Prime Minister David Cameron says his 27 EU counterparts expressed sadness and regret, but also "universal respect" over Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

"Our partners in the EU are genuinely sad that we are planning to leave this organisation," he says following their talks.

He added that they had constructive, positive and calm discussions and understood that Britain and Europe should seek "the closest possible relations."
