The Celtics reported Rondo is expected to miss between 6-8 weeks, rendering him unavailable for their season opener on October 29 against the Brooklyn Nets.
The Boston captain almost averaged a double-double across his 30 appearances last season (11.7 points, 9.8 assists).
Rondo is likely to be replaced in the starting point guard position by either Marcus Smart or Phil Pressey.
Rondo, along with coach Brad Stevens and basketball operations president Danny Ainge, are scheduled to appear at the franchise's media day on Monday.
