2014 was only 26 days old when it became a record breaking year for the Swiss player as he claimed the Australian Open title.

Having won his fifth career title just five days in to the new year at Chennai, the Swiss player claimed his first Grand Slam title by beating Rafael Nadal in the final.

The 29-year-old also rose to a career high ranking position of third and overtook Roger Federer as the highest ranked Swiss tennis player for a while, before Federer reclaimed the title in July.

Wawrinka had to earn the Australian Open the hard way, coming up against Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on his way to lifting the trophy, becoming the first Champion to beat the worlds top two since Sergi Bruguera at the French Open in 1993.

Stan also added a first ATP Masters 1000 Tour title to his collection as he beat Federer in Monte Carlo. The win put him top of the Race to London rankings in April, but he eventually finished fourth.

After this fantastic start his season began to tail off, he fell in the first round of the French Open and has only reached the semi's at Queen's since he won the Masters.

Wawrinka did record his best performance at Wimbledon, but that was a Quarter-final loss to Federer.

Despite some poor form in the second half of 2014 the right hander played a big part in helping Switzerland to the Davis Cup final.

His qualification to the Tour Finals was confirmed in October after he could no longer fall below seventh in the race rankings.
