The Gunners have not won their previous three league games coming into this one and were looking for a revenge for their 4-0 loss in their reverse fixture against Southampton.

Wenger made a big call by dropping Per Mertesacker and turning to Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista.

Arsenal had the chances to win the game from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez but Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Foster was on hand to save.

Shane Long was however excellent for Southampton as he managed to disturb the Arsenal defence on his own.

The drab first half ended with boos from the home fans to their team.

Arsenal responded after the break as Aaron Ramsey set up Olivier Giroud but his effort was tipped over the bar by the impressive Foster.

Theo Walcott was sent in for Joel Campbell and the England international had Arsenal’s best chance but was denied twice by Foster.
