After a intense pressure from Chelsea, Costa pounced on a Branislav Ivanovic to finish past Petr Cech in the 23rd minute.

Chelsea were on top now, controlling possession as they made use of the one-man advantage.

Towards the end of the first half, Arsenal started to show intent and were unlucky not to go level courtesy of unimpressive finishes from Theo Walcot and Mathieu Flamini.

Arsenal continued to get half chances especially after the introduction of Alexis Sanchez.
