The seventh seed was the overwhelming favourite heading into the contest, with 111 places separating the two in the ATP world rankings.

However, it was Kuznetsov - ranked 118 - who dug deep to secure a 6-7 (5-7) 6-0 3-6 6-3 6-2 triumph on court number two.

Ferrer had been a doubt heading into the third Grand Slam of the season due to a stomach problem which forced him to withdraw from the Topshelf Open.

The Spaniard was certainly well below his usual high standard and Kuznetsov made him pay with a fine performance in which he hit 77 winners.

Kuznetsov, who needed over three hours to secure the win, was given a warm reception by spectators as he was left to celebrate his first win over a top-10 player.

It marks the first time the Russian has gone beyond round two at SW19, and he now meets Leonardo Mayer in round three.
