The governor formally declared his intention to run for the Senate again during  a stakeholders' meeting of the All Progressives' Congress (APC) in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

"People have been speculating. Don't speculate anymore. By the benevolence of the Almighty God, I'm running for the Senate," he said.

Amosun was the representative of the Ogun Central Senatorial district between 2003 and 2007 before he lost the governorship election in 2007. He was finally elected governor in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.
