Speculation surrounding Fernando Alonso's potential departure from Aston Martin and a return to Alpine has been rife in recent weeks. However, a significant piece of the Formula 1 transfer puzzle fell into place today: Franco Colapinto is confirmed to stay with Alpine until at least the end of 2027. This development effectively leaves the two-time world champion with limited options for next year.
While this scenario wasn't highly probable, Flavio Briatore hinted at it once or twice, perhaps primarily to pressure Colapinto's camp. Yet, it wasn't entirely out of the question either.
At Zandvoort, Alonso stated his intention to meet with Lawrence Stroll to discuss his future, clarifying that he wasn't bound by a specific deadline to make a decision. Concurrently, Mike Krack and Adrian Newey expressed their hope for the Spaniard to remain with the team through 2027.
Reports from Spain suggested Alonso would re-sign with Aston Martin for two years, reportedly worth 40 million euros per season. However, this speculation has yet to be corroborated by other sources.
As of today, new information indicates that Alonso will indeed extend his contract with Aston Martin. His new deal is expected to be announced in Madrid mid-month, coinciding with the Spanish Grand Prix at the new "Madring" circuit.
