Ahmad sensationally beat veteran CAF leader Issa Hayatouin the election that held at the CAF 39th Ordinary General Assembly at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa on Thursday, March 16.

Ahmad got votes from 34 federations from 54 federations which voted in the election, the remaining votes from 20 federations went to Hayatou.

Ahead of his resumption, the 57-year-old has tendered his resignation as the Deputy leader of the Malagasy Senate, a position he has held since February 2015.

According to reports, Ahmad tendered the resignation on Monday, March 20 at about 4.45 p.m local time.

As required by CAF rules, Ahmad will also resign as president of the Malagasy Football Federation (MFF) before resuming office as president of CAF.

In an interview with the General Secretary of the MFF, Ododa revealed that Ahmad is expected to tender his resignation on Wednesday, March 22 just before he travels to Cairo, Egypt to resume duties as president of CAF.

Ahead of his resumption, Ahmad has released an official statement, his first since winning the election to become CAF President.

In a statement on the CAF website, he paid tribute to his predecessor Hayatou, insisting that the Cameroonian still remains a part of the confederation.

“From now on, CAF, CAF, CAF, begins a whole new chapter in its history. She will be the CAF of all and she will be above all CAF exemplary, professional, transparent, modern in all her actions, open and focused on an exceptional and historic future,” part of the statement read.
