A treacherous stomp of the ankle of Nigeria’s midfielder by France and PSG central midfielder Blaise Matuidi is liable to keep Onazi Ogenyi out of action for weeks.
Ogenyi was substituted later in the second half in Monday’s round of 16 clash between Nigeria and France after the tackle from Matuidi and the French took advantage of his absence by capitalising on the sluggishness of Mikel and the open field in the Nigerian midfield.
The Lazio midfielder broke his tibia and fibula and now has his legs in a cast, it is though that he could be out for weeks, though it is not yet certain how long he will remain on the sidelines.
Stephen Keshi suggested that Onazi would be "out now probably for weeks." After the France game
John Obi Mikel also expressed fears that he would be out for long.
The challenger Blaise Matuidi apologized for the tackle, saying he is not a bad player: "Sorry I didn't want to hurt Onazi. I am very sad, I'm not a bad player. I even went in the locker room of Nigeria to apologise."
Onazi accepted the Frenchman’s apology via twitter:
Onazi looks set to miss the start of the Italian football season with this development.
