Why President will not intervene in NASS crisis

Shehu made the disclosure on Thursday, June 25, 2015, while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari will not intervene in the ongoing National Assembly crisis because he has been advised to ‘stay above it’, his media aide, Garba Shehu has explained.

The presidential media aide said that Buhari was advised against intervening by governor-members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who he held a meeting with over the crisis.

Shehu explained that the President “mostly listened to what they were saying” and “in fairness to them, the governors took responsibility for the way forward.”

“They advised the President to maintain his posture not to be seen to be meddling in the affairs of the National Assembly ‘stay above it and allow us to handle it’ and I think this is what you saw coming from the governors,” Shehu said.

“As a leader, the President has given guidance… His own position is that if the eye troubles you, whatever medicine you’re going to apply, don’t put a pin. The President is not unconcerned,” he added.

Shehu also stated that Buhari was still of the opinion that the National Assembly was independent and could handle its own challenges.

The Assembly has been plunged into chaos over leadership positions, a situation which resulted in a brawl in the House of Representatives chamber  on Thursday.
