Senate President Bukola Saraki during his trial at the Conduct of Conduct Tribunal.

Saraki’s trial started on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, after the CCT refused to adjourn it at his lawyer’s request.

The Senate President expressed his joy at the commencement of the trial via a statement released by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

The statement reads in part:

“The Senate President noted that even though the prosecution tried to bring in some dramatic narratives, it was clear that they were merely thrashing around and hoping to titillate the public with salacious tales.”

“He added that he was hopeful however that when the time comes, his lawyers will have the opportunity to present his case.”

Saraki had earlier approached the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court in a bid to stop the trial but both courts dismissed his applications.

The Senate President is facing charges of asset declaration fraud before the CCT.
