Govt committed to curbing open defecation

The state government is said to be determined to implement the roadmap to check the ugly trend which had become a source of serious concern.

Open Defecation

Alhaji Abdullahi Sadiq, the Director, Water, Kano StateRural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday.

He said the state government was determined to implement the roadmap to check the ugly trend which had become a source of serious concern for the government.

“The Federal Government developed the roadmap and distributed the template to various states for implementation by the respective state governments,” he said.

He explained that states were expected to construct public conveniences at market places, motor parks and other public places as part of measures to check indiscriminate open defecation across the country based on the roadmap.

However, Sadiq attributed the delay in the implementation of the roadmap in the state to the fact that it was capital intensive, pointing out that without the support of the federal government, the desired objective may not be achieved early.

“We realised that the roadmap is capital intensive hence the urgent need for the federal government to come to the aid of states towards that direction,” the official said.

Sadiq urged the federal government to address the problem which is threatening environmental health in the state in particular and the country at large.
