Is Mindhunter's Ted Gunn Based on a Real Person?

Who Is 'Mindhunter's Ted Gunn Based On?
  • Many of Mindhunter's characters are based on real-life people.
  • Assistant Director Ted Gunn was a new character in Mindhunter's second season.
  • Fans are curious to know if he's also based on a real FBI agent.

By now, most Mindhunter fans know that FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench weren't actually real-life people. Ford and Tench are actually based on real-life agents who worked in the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, and while their names may be made up, Ford and Tench deal with cases that real FBI agents investigated in the '70s and '80s.

Season two of Mindhunter saw the arrival of Assistant Director Ted Gunn, and viewers are wondering if he's also based on someone.

In a rare move for the Netflix show, Assistant Director Ted Gunn isn't based on anyone in particular. As The Express reports, Gunn's role is more of a symbolic one, and his character is supposed to signify the "changing leadership of the FBI in the 1980s, which was becoming more progressive towards investigating homicides with behavioral studies."

During season one of the show, Ford, Tench, and Dr. Wendy Carr constantly butt heads with other members of the FBI, especially Robert Shepard, the assistant director at the FBI Academy overseeing the Behavioral Science Unit.

However, Gunn also asks Tench and Carr to keep an eye on Holden, who's known for his rather creative tactics when it comes to extracting confessions from serial killers, so it looks like he'll still have some rules for Ford. And while there hasn't been any word on a third season of Mindhunter , we bet that we'll continue to see Gunn's role evolve in the new season.
