Two Fulani herdsmen sentenced to 20 years in jail over illegal possession of firearms

The sentencing had been handed down during the court hearing held on Monday, May 16, 2016 to the herdsmen identified as Hassan Abidu and Yakubu Salem.

The sentencing had been handed down during the court hearing held on Monday, May 16, 2016 to the herdsmen identified as Hassan Abidu and Yakubu Salem.

The suspects are now reportedly facing 20 years in prison with hard labour following allegations of being a oart of an armed squad known for terrorizing the indigenes of Ibusa community in Delta State.

The herdsmen were reportedly arrested on February 23, 2015 after a distress call had been made revealing that a suspected group of Fulani boys had been seen at Power line, Ibusa, equipped with firearms and dangerous weapons.

The suspects had reportedly been prosecuted on a two count charge of unlawful possession of firearms which had been tendered against them by the Attorney-General of the state, punishable under Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R.II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria,2010.

The pair bagged 10 years sentences respectively with hard labour and no option of fine.
