After mounting pressure from child right groups and the media, a seven-year-old boy, Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, who has been in detention at the Enugu State Police Command over alleged murder for more than a month, has regained his freedom.

The primary two pupil was detained following an unfortunate incident in which he mistakenly pulled the trigger of a gun owned by his mother's employer, Edward Oforma, which killed a 12-year-old boy, Oluebube Boniface, at the Independence Layout area of Enugu, on May 29.

The mother of the minor, Nwakaego, had narrated how the incident happened, saying that her employer's son had told her two sons to help clean his father's room and Chibuike had found the gun and showed it to his older brother who instructed him to return it but the boy mistakenly pulled the trigger and the bullet struck Oluebube who was in another compound and he died instantly.

Nwakaego, through her lawyer, Olu Omotayo, of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, had raised the alarm over Chibuike's continued detention while the owner of the gun, Oforma, was not arrested or even invited by the police.

In a swift reaction, the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, had come out to clear the air, saying the boy was not in detention, but that the police was holding him in order to protect him from jungle justice.
