His stage name Vibetone, derives from the word Vibrato, a music term which simply means change of pitch. It comes from being able to transition from a music addict to a talent manager and now, an artist. His official debut also started with ‘just vibes.’
A few days ago, he had a chat with Pulse. You can read it below;
Pulse: Describe your background - Family, school, personality as a child, your person and teenager?
Vibetone: I am from a humble background, growing up in a family of nine in Ojodu suburb of Lagos and listening to the music of great Nigerian stars shaped my musical influence. I attended Mayflower Secondary School at Ikenne, Ogun State. I proceeded to the University of Ilorin where I studied English. I then got an MBA from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, USA.
Pulse: How did you discover music?
Vibetone: Honestly, music discovered me! I've been a music addict since childhood. I listened to records from my dad’s gramophone and could sing them all after the first listen.
Growing up as a teenager, I was not involved with music apart from listening, on getting to university I started a record/management label Shelters Entertainment and signed an artist (FAYED). I was doing that until I started realizing I could do it myself! And that was it! It just came!
Pulse: What made you decide to take music seriously as a career and when did you take it seriously?
Vibetone: It was an experience I had that changed me totally: I did a little freestyle at a studio in New York and the feedback was insane! I sent it to a friend in Nigeria, and he told me that he loved it. That episode sparked a fire that keeps burning. If they could love it, everyone could.
Pulse: Describe your music in a few words?
Vibetone: AfroVibe! That’s it, my music comes from a place of deep vibrations and I lace it with afrobeats.
Pulse: What made 2019 the perfect year for your debut?
Vibetone: Wow! Thinking about it brings goosebumps and memories! I was in a dilemma where I was constantly questioning myself: should I? Can I?
But like I said earlier, music discovered me! I have a fierce persona, I decided I couldn’t wait anymore, no time is the right time but right now. I did it anyway and here we are.
Pulse: How have you been funding your music?
Vibetone: [Laughs] I told you earlier that Vibetone is the artistic persona of Samuel Adeniji, I'm a first class graduate of the School of Hardknocks! I am a businessman and investor. My portfolio cuts across many business enterprises, import and export, tech, management and crypto.
Pulse: What inspired the title of your debut EP?
Vibetone: Simple, Me! Pushing out a body of work seemed like too much at that time, when I was relatively new and just finding my feet. But the drive and burning desire in me to share this gift with the world wouldn’t let me rest. The more I questioned myself, the more the fire burned, until I couldn't take it anymore and had to face my fears head first.
Looking back right now and seeing how much I've grown as an artist, and as a person, I'll be forever grateful I took that step. The EP got mad love, it opened doors for me and I want to take this chance to thank everyone who worked on it.
Pulse: Are you a loverboy, you seem to sing about love a lot?
Vibetone: I am a lover to a fault, I strongly believe in love and I have experienced it. I've been hurt by love and I've lived by it. So it’s pretty easy for me to sing about.
But I don’t only make love songs, I have other projects that reiterates that; like “Demo” (shout out to Dxl Da beat, he made that). You can find in the link on my Instagram [@vibetonegram].
Pulse: You recently shared a stage with notable artists like Tekno and Kranium. How did that feel?
Vibetones: It was unreal and the feeling was crazy [he exclaims]. I was slightly anxious before getting on stage, but once I got there, I received the shock of my life: the audience knew my songs.
I was in shock! They were singing word for word, note for note. And honestly at that point, I was a bit emotional, I mean I've dreamt of this day all my life and honestly I wasn't prepared for it. It’s a priceless feeling
Pulse: Describe your experience at the Afro Caribbean carnival?
Vibetone: Wow. I could relive that moment over and over again in my head. The crowd singing my songs? The atmosphere? Gosh! I got goosebumps right now. It was amazing.
Pulse: What does the rest of 2021 hold for you?
Vibetone: Better than what I've got so far! I have a new single dropping on the 29th October titled ‘Loyal’. The new single was produced by authentic music, mastered and mixed by DXL da Beat. It is also a love song that preaches loyalty among lovers.
Let me leak a little secret, I'm coming home! Yes! Vibetone is coming home! I'll be on radio stations, t.v stations everywhere; the anticipation is crazy, so crazy that I'm fully booked before my arrival! This year will definitely end in a bang for me.
