Gary Oldman wins best actor for "Darkest Hour"

Gary Oldman beat out Daniel Kaluuya and Daniel Day-Lewis to win the award for his performance as Winston Churchill.

The actor won the award at the ceremony which held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

In "Darkest Hour," Oldman portrayed U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the early days of the Second World War.

Receiving the award, he praised Churchhill, saying, "I would just like to salute Sir Winston Churchill who has been marvelous company on what can be described as an incredible journey."

He also thanked his mother for her support, saying, "she is 99 years young, next birthday. And she's watching the ceremony from the comfort of her sofa. I say to my mother, thank you for your love and support. Put the kettle on. I’m bringing an Oscar home."

Oldman beat out Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) to win the award.

It was the first win and second nomination for the actor, who had been nominated in the same category in 2012 for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," but lost to Jean Dujardin.

The Oscar victory follows Oldman's win at the 2018 Golden Globes and Baftas.
