Schools’ Will Resume On Sept 22nd As NMA, FG Agree, But...

An agreement between the Nigerian government and the Nigerian Medical Associations means schools will resume on September 22nd as scheduled, but there are conditions that must be met

Primary and secondary schools will re-open on the 2nd of September as the Federal Government and the Nigerian Medical Association reached a compromise today.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Education, the NMA accepted the September 22 date earlier announced by Education Minister, Ibrahim Shekarau.

The President of the NMA, Dr. Kayode Obembe, said the association agreed to the reopening of schools "in order not to feed into the fear monster in the country."

NMA mandated the government must, among other conditions, maintain “highest level of vigilance” in the several entry points in the country, resuscitate infectious disease hospital in states and ensure comprehensive screening of travelers, reports.

NMA also urged vigilance on the part of the international Port Health Services.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Education, Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Saturday said it doesn’t "make any sense" to keep primary and secondary schools in the country closed.

His comment followed a plan by the House of Representatives to review the September 22nd date last Tuesday.
