N400m bursary approved for 32,000 students

The Delta State Government has approved the sum of N400 million for the payment of state Students Assistance Scheme bursaries for about 32, 000 students studying in various universities.

The state Commissioner for Information, Patrick Ukah, the Commissioners for Higher Education, Engr. Jude Sinebe and the Executive Secretary, Scholarship Board, Elijah Ologe, announced the development on Tuesday after the Executive Council Meeting [EXCO] at the Government House, Asaba.

The said the EXCO approved the sum for payment to 31,859 students of the state origin in higher institutions as bursary award for the 2013/2014 session.

According to them, approval came after a verification and biometric exercise by the Scholarship Board which saw the number of beneficiaries being cut to 31,859 from over 40,000.

The Commissioners urged the leadership of the National Association of Delta State Students [NADESSTU] to assist the government in eliminating sharp practices in the scheme.

Delta state students have protested several times in the past over unpaid bursaries.
