According to Sowetan Live, one of the pontiff’s trademark white skull caps was sold on eBay on Wednesday as part of a stunt by an Italian TV show to raise money for a Catholic charity in Africa.
In June, Francis donated the garment to a man who stood in the crowd in St Peter's Square. He took it to Le Iene, an entertainment show broadcast by the Mediaset network of former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi.
The skullcap was offered on eBay for a starting price of 1 euro and attracted a final bid of 89,050 euros. Le Iene said the funds would go to Soleterre, a non-governmental organization run by a missionary nun helping women give birth in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
