Matfield, who has the most caps for South Africa with 113, incurred a small tear to cartilage in his knee at training on Monday, with scans ruling him out of the tournament opener against the Pumas in Pretoria.

The veteran lock is set to be replaced by Lood de Jager in the Springboks' squad.
"Victor's injury will initially be treated conservatively and a decision on his further participation in the competition will be made during the course of next week," South Africa team doctor Craig Roberts said.
In a further blow for Heyneke Meyer's men, skipper Jean de Villiers remains in doubt due to a knee problem.
De Villiers, 33, injured his knee playing for Super Rugby outfit Stormers in May, and only recently returned to the training track.
