Ex-Chelsea captain defender, Desailly joins Ghana Black Stars team

The Ghanaian born ex-France international, has been appointed as part of the country’s technical crew for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

Marcel Desailly was at one time hinted to take over the coaching job at Black Stars but was reported to have rejected the offer, he however now will act out his new role to assess the country’s Group C opponents.

Former Ghana Football Association chairman Alhaji MND Jawul made the disclosure through local medium Graphic Sports

“Marcel and I have been in communion and I have spoken to him about coaching the Stars and he said exactly what Mr. Afriyie said: that the time would come.

"I think what Mr Afriyie can announce today is that Marcel will play a technical role when we go to Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) and when that is done, the Minister of Youth and Sports should organize a float for us in readiness to take the Cup that will land from Malabo.”

The 46 year-old 1998 World Cup winner will work with Israeli coach, Avram Grant in the competition which holds from January 17 to February 8.

Another ex-international, Stephen Appiah has also been called upon to help the new manager do well in Equatorial Guinea

Appiah however, stated that he accepts to do the job for the Black Stars and not the FA

“I am not doing it for the FA,” he said. “I am doing it for Ghana.”
