Antony: Why Ajax forced Manchester United to pay 'huge sum' for Brazilian

Ajax Amsterdam was left pissed following the transfer of Brazilian winger Antony dos Santos to Manchester United in the summer.

Antony completed an incredible €100m transfer from the Eredivisie to the Premier League on deadline day.

In what was a protracted transfer move, which saw the 22-year-old go on strike, both clubs finally reached an agreement to allow Antony become to the second Ajax player to reunite with former boss Erik Ten Hag. 

The Brazilian made his United debut on Sunday and went on to score the opening goal as the Red Devils defeated League leaders Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford.

United finally got their man on deadline day but his former club, Ajax, was left angry at the English club for their bad timing.

According to sporting director, Gerry Hamstra, United's timing was so bad and left the club struggling to find a replacement. 

Manchester United's timing was so bad. The last few days [of the window] became even more hectic after Ajax had already gone through a major rebuild of the squad following the departure of lots of top-class players," Hamstra said per Daily Mail via De Telegraaf.

''It was so difficult to leave our manager with such a void. We all think we lost too many first-team players who always start. We had a summer with totally different expectations."

''We wanted to keep the group together as much as possible to be able to perform well in the Champions League and to carry on being successful."

''That's what we talked about with Alfred. Of course, we knew there were a few snags.''

''But no one had foreseen that our players would be bought for such huge sums of money.''

Ajax lost no fewer than five first-team players in the summer including Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana, Nicolas Tagliafico, Noussair Mazraoui, Sebastien Haller from the Ivory Coast and Ryan Gravenberch.
