England coach Stuart Lancaster said rugby union convert Sam Burgess could make his national team debut for the Saxons next month.

Burgess made his long awaited debut for Bath on Friday, playing the final 18 minutes in a 25-6 win over Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership.

The 25-year-old has already been earmarked as a future international rugby player and the former South Sydney Rabbitohs star could get his first taste of representative competition in the 15-man game for England Saxons - the country's second-string team.

While Burgess is a player of 'interest', featuring in February's Six Nations may be too soon for the Bath second-rower, with the Saxons' match against the Ireland Wolfhounds on January 30 more likely.

"That would be a big step, but who knows? We'll wait and see. If he plays well, there's a Saxons game in January," said Lancaster.

"Sam is a player who will be of interest, without a doubt. It took about three Quins players to stop him.

"He's a powerful man and it will be nice to see him get a few more games and put his hand up."
