Mal Meninga confirmed as Kangaroos coach after QLD stint
Mal Meninga has been appointed Australia coach until the end of 2019 after a successful stint in charge of Queensland.
Meninga enjoyed a decorated playing career and an incredible record with the Maroons, winning 20 of 30 State of Origin matches.
His appointment as Kangaroos coach was expected and finally confirmed on Thursday, with the 55-year-old to begin immediately.
NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said all the focus was on the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
"Mal's work with us starts today – so it is a very important day for the Kangaroos," he said.
"Our aim is to win the Rugby League World Cup in 2017 and the job officially begins now."
Meninga, who represented Australia 46 times in Tests, said: "For the players, it is the ultimate privilege to the wear the colours of your country, and it is something that they all aspire to.
"For me, it's always been something I've wanted to do. It is truly an honour to be in this position, as the new coach of the Kangaroos."
