A third-period goal from Derek Stepan lifted the New York Rangers to a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals in the NHL.

Stepan scored the go-ahead goal 17 seconds into the final period to see the Rangers claim their win at the Verizon Center.

Antti Raanta made 32 saves, but the Rangers had coughed up a two-goal lead before Stepan's effort against the Metropolitan Division leaders.

Jesper Fast and Keith Yandle had netted in the first period, only for Jay Beagle and T.J. Oshie to convert for the Caps in the second.

But Stepan's 15th goal of the season, which deflected off the skate of Brooks Orpik, was enough to seal the Rangers' win.

The Columbus Blue Jackets answered every time they were challenged by the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 win.

David Savard scored twice for the winners, who made it three victories from their past four games.

Every time the Oilers scored on Friday, the Blue Jackets responded with a goal of their own within a minute.

The Dallas Stars ended their four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win against the New Jersey Devils.
