Watch vibrant music video inspired by Maya Angelou’s ‘Phenomenal Woman’
The music video for Laura Mvula’s latest single “Phenomenal Woman,” a female anthem inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name, is basically the visual equivalent of pure joy and freedom.
“Phenomenal Woman” was shot in the Bo-Kaap section of Cape Town, and features Mvula being just that, singing about being free in your womanhood and standing tall.
The track builds on a thumping beat and bass line as the singer belts out lyrics like “Nobody ever told her she was beauty, one day she realised she was already free.”
“I wrote this anthem to raise up our women,” Mvula says in a press release.
“We are the givers of life, we are the children bearers, the nurturers, the heroines, we are extraordinary in our ordinariness, we fly, we fight we are ‘Phenomenal Woman’.”
This video is awesome, be prepared to press play and play and play again.
Mvula’s second album, The Dreaming Room will be out June 17.
