Eritrea's Ghebreslassie became the youngest winner of the endurance event at a world championships meet, stopping the clock at two hours, 12 minutes and 28 seconds.

The 19-year-old was well off his personal best of 2:07:47 set in Hamburg in April, but it mattered little as he careered to a stunning gold medal.

Ethiopia's Yemane Tsegay (2:13:07) won silver in a season-best time, while Ugandan runner Solomon Mutai (2:13:29) completed the podium.

Tsegay's medal marked the fourth straight world championships at which an Ethiopian was on the podium in the men's marathon.

Defending champion Stephen Kiprotich (2:14:42) finished in sixth place.
