Steve Hansen calls for consistent refereeing

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen wants clarity and consistency from referee Romain Poite during Saturday's Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia.

Jaco Peyper received plenty of criticism for his handling of the first Bledisloe Test in Sydney, particularly for the free-kicks against the All Blacks at scrum time and for the yellow card he dished out to prop Wyatt Crockett for cynical play.

Hansen said on Thursday that the South African official had admitted he had been wrong and had apologised.

"There were quite a few things we had a chat about," Hansen said after handing Ryan Crotty his first All Blacks start in one of three changes to the starting line-up for the blockbuster clash at Eden Park.

"It was a good conversation and I respect the man for his honesty. He's no different than the players. Some days you have a bad day. He's had a bad day at the office and he's put his hand up.

"But I've got to emphasise, it wasn't just his problem. We had a hell of a bad day ourselves."

Hansen and his players are keen to move on from the ANZ Stadium disappointment after a sub-par performance saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end with a 12-12 draw.

The coach will speak to Frenchman Poite on Friday in a bid to ensure his pack do not suffer similar problems again.

"[We want to know] how he's going to ref the scrums and ask him to be consistent," Hansen said of what would be on his wish-list.

While hooker Dane Coles would also like to see greater consistency in the officiating of scrums, he felt the onus was on the players to adapt better than they had done with Peyper, who had demanded a gap between the front rows before they engaged " something not all referees do under current laws.

"This week if something's not going right we've got to learn to adapt on the move and make sure it doesn't take two or three free-kicks to sort that out," he said.

"He's a Frenchman and we know the French love to scrum. I'm sure he'll have his own take on how he wants the scrums to go ... we've just got to adapt to what he does want."

"We're pretty determined [to atone for last week]. They [the Wallabies] will be taking a bit of confidence out of last week, especially the forward pack.

"We know we need to step it up. We were disappointed with the result. We want to put a good performance in. Every Test starts up front and we want to have a good crack."

The changes to the New Zealand XV for Saturday are a result of injuries to Ma'a Nonu (shoulder) and Jerome Kaino (elbow) and the return of Conrad Smith after he missed the Sydney Test for the birth of his son.

Crotty and Smith will form a new-look midfield, while Liam Messam comes in for Kaino at blindside flanker.

The remainder of the team have been given a chance to redeem themselves.
