St Helens have moved to ease their injury problems by re-signing full-back Shannon McDonnell from Wests Tigers until the end of next season.

Saints were dealt a major blow on Wednesday when Lance Hohaia announced his retirement due to recurrent post-match concussion-type symptoms, while key men Jonny Lomax and Paul Wellens are also sidelined due to injury.

McDonnell played three games for the Super League champions before suffering a broken jaw last season, but the 27-year-old is to spend a second spell at Langtree Park.

Saints chief executive Mike Rush said: "It's clear with Jonny Lomax out for the season and Paul Wellens currently sidelined that we need cover at full-back as well as in the backs.

"Shannon can cover a number of positions and we'd like to thank Phil Moss at Wests Tigers and his agent Steve Gillis for making it happen.

"He did a great job last season and we look forward to welcoming him to St Helens once again."
