Ray Rice has been cleared to return to the NFL after his indefinite suspension was overturned on appeal.

The former Baltimore Ravens man was released by the franchise and suspended by the NFL in September after a video showed him punching his then-fiancee, and now wife, Janay in a hotel lift in February.

Rice was initially handed a two-game suspension in July after being charged with aggravated assault, but that was later changed to an indefinite ban when video evidence emerged of the incident.

In conjunction with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), Rice appealed that ruling after the NFLPA said an employee cannot be punished twice if all relevant facts were available when the first ban was issued.

And following Friday's hearing, the NFL's official website announced that Rice had won his appeal and is now free to sign for any team in the league.

The 27-year-old running back joined the Ravens in 2008 and is a three-time NFL Pro-Bowler.
