Mexican Grand Prix names last corner Nigel Mansell Bend
Ex-Formula One champion Nigel Mansell has been honoured by organisers of the Mexican Grand Prix, who have named the final corner at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after him.
Mansell won his only F1 drivers' championship in 1992, including his win in the most recent Mexico GP - which ends a 23-year hiatus from the calendar on November 1.
Organisers have completed a revamp of the old track to bring it up to modern safety standards.
And in the lead-up to the historic race, Mexican organisers have named Turn 17 'Nigel Mansell Bend'.
"He is a real sportsman and we are pleased to contribute to his legacy in the sport by appointing such an iconic bend with [his] name," Mexican GP marketing director Rodrigo Sanchez said.
Mansell famously passed Gerhard Berger on the corresponding section of the track in 1990 - then known as the Peraltada - to claim second position.
"I have extremely fond memories of racing in Mexico City," the 62-year-old Brit said.
"The people, the energy and the track itself were all highlights of the F1 calendar back then for me.
"When I found out about the naming of the bend of course I was delighted. Flattered, proud and delighted in equal measure.
"The news instantly brought to mind my unexpected overtaking manoeuvre on Gerhard Berger actually on the old Peraltada section to come in second behind my Ferrari team-mate Alain Prost back in 1990 - I can't believe that was 25 years ago and that it's been 23 years since my last win at the track.
"I've carefully observed what the organisers have been doing and I'm really looking forward to seeing it for myself a little later this year."
