BWF World Championships: Lee Chong Wei, Jan O Jorgensen through

Lee Chong Wei and Jan O Jorgensen avoided upsets on the first day of the BWF World Championships in Denmark on Monday.

Chong Wei, seeking to win the competition for the first time in the absence of rival Lin Dan, was a convincing 21-11, 21-12 victor against Lee Dong Keun in just 45 minutes.

Home favourite Jorgensen too swept into the second round with relative ease, recording a 21-15, 21-11 win over Maxime Moreels of Belgium.

The Dane will face Eetu Heino next while Jorgensen's compatriot Viktor Axelsen moves into the second round after proving too strong for Henri Hurskainen of Sweden.

There were comfortable victories too for sixth seed Wang Zhengming, Erik Meijs and Petr Koukal, who saw off Michal Rogalski, Joe Wu and Vladimir Ivanov.

David Obernosterer proved too much for Daniel Paiola, Nan Wei surprised Kento Momota and Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei came through against Raul Must.

Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh was a 21-16 21-17 winner against Howard Shu while Scott Evans and Pablo Abian were handed walkovers to the next stage.

Sho Sasaki, Heino, Dinuka Karunaratne and Dieter Domke all overcame first-round opponents to move into the second round.

None of the women's seeds were in action on Monday, but Kristina Gavnholt sealed a meeting with top seed Li Xuerui after seeing off Jamie Subandhi 22-20, 21-23, 21-16.

Yip Pui Yin will face Wang Shixian, ranked second for the tournament, after seeing off Ireland's Chloe Magee, while there were also wins for Russian pair Natalia Perminova and Olga Golovanova.

Germany's Karin Schnaase was too strong for Scottish opponent Kirsty Gilmour while Brazil's Fabiana Silva bowed out 21-14 21-14 to Pai Hsiao-Ma of Chinese Taipei.

Beatriz Corrales benefitted from a walkover against Busanan Ongbumrungpan with Petya Nedelcheva, Lindaweni Fanetri and Tee Jing Yi picking up wins against Marija Ulitina, Sashina Vignes Waran and Michelle Chan Ky respectively.

Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam and England's Sarah Walker moved into the next round where they will be joined by home favourite Line Kjaersfeldt and Bellaetrix Manuputty, who both progressed without dropping a game.

Anna Thea Madsen was the final competitor to progress on Monday, sealing a 21-13 15-21 21-16 victory over Jiayuan Chen.
