Instead, the Canada-based company will completely outsource all of its future hardware projects, according to a statement it gave at its quarterly earnings call on Wednesday.

BlackBerry was once lord over all of the smartphone world, but the iPhone and the dawn of a new smartphone era soon relegated it to the background.

It never recovered to gain ground and has since fallen off completely into near-total oblivion. This move has been in the works for a while - BlackBerry's latest DTEK50 smartphone is basically a rebadged AlcatelIdol4.

Not too long ago, BlackBerry CEO John Chen alluded to this saying, "if by September, I couldn’t find a way to get [to profitability], then I need to seriously consider being a software company only."

As it moves on from making hardware, it will be focusing on building its software and enterprise security business, which will now be the mainstay of its core business.

Goodbye, BlackBerry. It was fun while it lasted.
