The recent criticism of Arsene Wenger has prompted Arsenal to appoint their first-ever director football.
According to , Overmars who played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000 is set to be appointed.
As director of football, Overmars will oversee the activities of Wenger or a new manager if the French manager leaves when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The move to appoint a director of football may not go down well with Wenger who has been 100% in-charge of all football matters in his 21-year reign at the club.
Arsenal believe Overmars is the best candidate for the job because of his knowledge of the club, having played three years under Wenger.
He was part of the squad that won the Premier League and FA Cup double under Wenger in 1998.
Arsenal are also considering Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc having been impressed with his works so far at the club.
