Kenyan actress nabs Tony award nomination

'Eclipsed' marked Lupita's Broadway debut and earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.

One could argue that Lupita Nyong'o is one of Hollywood's most privileged actors.

Having landed an Oscar award from her first major movie role (12 Years A Slave), Lupita looks set to re-enact history as she's landed a Tony award nomination for the play 'Eclipsed'.

'Eclipsed' also marked Lupita's Broadway debut and earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.

She is up against Hollywood heavyweights like Jessica Lange, Michelle Williams and British-Nigerian actress, Sophie Okonedo.

The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, also known as the Tony Awards recognises and awards achievement in live Broadway theatre.

This year's nominees were announced by Tony winner Nikki M James and Tony nominee Andrew Rannells from the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel.

The 2016 Tony awards, which happens to be the 70th award show, will hold on Sunday, June 12th.
