Tsonga was battling Omar Jasika in the second round tie in Melbourne when the ball struck the girl's face.

The French tennis star immediately stopped the game to attend to the ball girl and lead her to receive medical attention.

Tsonga was heavily applauded for his act by the audience but the French tennis star says helping was just normal to him.

"I didn't know it was going to be something like this," Tsonga said of the public reaction.

"It's just normal. She was really in trouble and the eyes were a bit [teary]. It was just normal to help her to go out of the stadium.

"I hope she's going well now. I asked the umpire during the game and she said it's okay, but with the umpire you never know. I will double check if she's well now."

The world number nine came back to resume the game and beat Jasika in straight sets.
