Three-time grand slam semi-finalist Date-Krumm, who turns 45 later this month, cruised to a 6-4 6-2 victory over Doi in their all-Japanese first-round clash.

Third seed Madison Brengle was untroubled by Anna-Lena Friedsam on her way to a 6-3 6-1 win in 59 minutes.

The American third seed dominated an out-of-sorts Friedsam, who paid the price for getting just 30 per cent of her first serves in.

Brengle's compatriot Christina McHale, seeded sixth, was made to work harder but still progressed with a 6-3 7-5 triumph Yulia Putintseva.
