The man simply identified himself as 'Alberto' said: ‘I participated in 18 killings. We shot them in the head and then blew up the bodies with dynamite, there was nothing left, not even their shadow.’

The call was traced by police – and the caller, real name Guillermo Reyes Ramssy was arrested.

The caller – a bus driver from Valparaíso – now faces trial for the killings, part of a campaign of murders which saw 3,000 civilians ‘disappear’ in the country.

He said, ‘The first time, I cried but the lieutenant was saying: ‘Good soldier, good soldier, brave soldier.’ Then ‘Pow. pow,’ again. The second time I liked it. I enjoyed it.’

‘I saw extreme violence; I knew how evil one can be. It wasn’t my war. You either killed them as soldiers or they sent you away as a political prisoner.’

The caller, in Chile’s Santiago, was initially talking about his love life – but confessed to killings as part of General Pinochet’s death squads in the 70s. Metro UK reported.
