Anamul hurt his shoulder during his team's six-wicket win over Scotland in Nelson on Thursday, ruling him out of the tournament.
Imrul, a left-handed opening batsman, has played 53 one-day internationals and averages 26.73 - including scoring one century.
Anamul had made 29 in both of his innings at the World Cup before injuring his right shoulder while fielding.
Bangladesh are eyeing a surprise place in the quarter-finals, sitting in fourth on five points ahead of a crucial match against fifth-placed England (two points) in Adelaide on Monday.
